Foothills Humane Society is Out of Space
Organization urges the community to adopt and foster pets in need
Columbus, NC – Foothills Humane Society (FHS) is at a critical capacity point and asking community members to adopt or foster pets in need. Over 475 animals have been taken in by FHS so far this year and shelter intake levels are expected to remain high throughout the summer. The simplest, yet most influential thing a community member can do to help homeless pets is to adopt or foster a shelter animal. FHS is reducing adoption fees to $20 for adult dogs and $10 for adult cats through the end of June. The adoption package includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, heartworm testing (and treatment, if applicable) for dogs, FIV/FeLV testing for cats, and a microchip. For those that cannot adopt, fostering is a great alternative. FHS provides foster parents with all needed supplies and support.
“It’s puppy and kitten season, so Polk County Animal Control and members of the public are bringing by strays daily and we have filled up the shelter” says Executive Director Bill Coleman. “This is not just a local problem as shelters around the country are at capacity and several of our regional shelters have reached out to us for help with the overload but unfortunately, we have been unable to assist them because of the volume of animals currently at FHS. The good news is that we are able to provide a good transitional home for those animals in our care until they find their forever home.”
All adoptable animals can be viewed on FHS’s Petfinder page, which is accessed through their website, www.foothillshumanesociety.org. In order to best serve the community, FHS is conducting meetings and adoptions by appointment. To book an appointment, please fill out an adoption application online. FHS’s adoption coordinator will process the application and contact applicants for an adoption appointment. For those interested in fostering, a foster application should be filled out online or you can contact our Foster Coordinator, Robyn Wells, at (828) 863-4444 Ext 5 or email volunteer@foothillshumanesociety.org.
